Inspiration Friday

Happy Friday!

This past week I've been spending pretty much every available free minute on the torch making beads. It's been quite a while since I focused on beadmaking, and I needed to immerse myself back into it. I'm tempted to head back down there later tonight. So many ideas to try out!

Here's a few pics of what I've been making - nothing super fancy, just getting my feet wet again.

I've got some of these up on my etsy site, and some up on ebay. With luck, I'll have a bunch to bring into the shop on Sunday as well.

We would love to have you show off your stuff! We're you inspired this past week by anything? Send us pics of your creation to info@beadfx.com with the subject line "Inspiration Friday"

Inspiration Friday

Happy Friday! And here in the Toronto area we had a fabulously wonderful mild day. Spring is finally coming.

I spent most of my very quiet week (sans kids) on the torch, making beads. I'm starting to amass quite the little pile that still needs to be cleaned.  I did manage to make up a little bracelet using some of my heat patinated copper bits.  I'm not entirely sure if I'm happy with it yet. I may rework it a bit more - it still needs something.

Inspiration Friday

With a new year, how about we make a few little changes to our Inspiration Friday posts? This year, you pick your inspiration reference! There are lots of places to find inspiration. Photo's, magazines, fabric, nature, patterns, textures...Have a really good look at the little things around you, and make something - anything at all. The whole point is to get you out of your comfort zone, and experiment with new beads, materials, found objects, ephemera - anything you can find!

We'd love to see what you come up with. Send us a picture of your new creation, along with a pic, or description of your inspiration reference.  Send it to contest@beadfx.com with the subject line "Inspiration Friday"

If you have a personal blog, or etsy/artfire/bigcartel type site - send us a link to that as well!

Nathalie sent us pics of two absolutely gorgeous  rings this week.

My latest inspiration has been what is sitting on my bench.

I really needed to clean it up, but in doing so, I kept thinking "Oh, I could use this part to make a ring" and after grabbing several various parts, I created a couple of "Bench Rings". I call them Bench Rings because they were designed using only things that were sitting out on my bench. It's a great way to clean up and make things at the same time!

The first one features a lovely Pink Botswana Agate with copper and brass rivets /accents, a sterling silver chain, sterling jump rings, etc, that I had sitting out.

The second ring features a very neat Peruvian Blue Opal cab, set in a Fine Silver bezel with sterling accents, and sitting on a thick PMC3 textured band.

Both rings are listed in my Canadian Rockies Art Studio on ArtFire if you want to see more pictures and get detailed information: http://www.CanadianRockiesArt.ArtFire.com

TGIF!
Cheers,
Nathalie

My inspiration this week is rusty, time worn, mossy, dug out of the earth kinda things. I really think I can play on this theme for quite some time.

None of these are technically finished. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with them yet. The necklace is not 'done' yet either. I think this pendant wants to be part of something larger, or patinated - we'll see.

Copper, fine silver, verdigris patina.

MissFickleMedia Heat Patina's on copper clay

Bronze, and fine silver metal clay.
Have a great weekend all!

From Nathalie:

Hiya! TGIF!!!

(It's been a  crazy day here today….) I have a new ring, made of PMC3, inspired by the cold weather outside – I can't wait for Spring! I can't wait to see pretty flowers blooming in my garden…

It's an interpretation of a Rose. Sort of a contemporary twist on a flower ring. A modern Rose Ring. I submitted it to the RAW2011 Flickr Group where we make 1 ring per week for the challenge.

For more information/more pictures on this ring, it's listed in my http://www.CanadianRockiesArt.ArtFire.com studio

Cheers!
Nathalie

I have something far less pretty for you this week. In fact, I'm not really sure where I'm going with these yet. I am enjoying just futzing around in the studio though - that counts for something right? lol!

You're probably asking ...Ummm....so what are they?  I think they'll be resin trays of some sort. They're a mix of copper, and fine silver - and I'm pretty sure I'm going to patina them first once I've got them filed and cleaned up a bit. We'll see...

Have a good weekend all!

I don't have too much this week for you as I'm still trying to get my studio cleaned up in between doing a million other things.
I do have a few things, but I mainly had fun editing them in picnik. It's a free online (and very easy to use) photo editing site. Upload your pics, edit, crop, and add fancy text and effects. Love it!!!

So if you haven't been sending us any eye candy due to lack of photo editing skill - You now have no excuse :-)

Personally, I don't have anything for you this week - I've spent my creative time trying to clean up the studio. Another day or two, and I should be able to find all of my beads and tools :-)  That, and I was about to start soldering some projects, and realized I must have left my soldering board  at beadfx last time I was there. I keep all of my traveling tools in one box, and always put them back in that box so that when I do travel to teach a class - I don't have to spend a week finding all of my tools. Everything was there except for my soldering boards - oh well....

We were sent a picture that I'm planning on putting up in the gallery - I thought I'd show the tree off here as well. Awesome!

If you ever think of making a tree - Farhana shared a link with us. While Farhana did not follow the instructions here, and has been making trees for a while - She does recommend this link as a good place to start: http://kimberlychapman.com/crafts/bftreetutorial.html

Our own Dwyn has been making some fabulous lampwork horses recently - every now and again she'll share up a pic of one of her creations on facebook. I asked her to share some of them with you this week.

It can be hard to let go.

I've been making horses all my life - from mathbook doodles to glass beads - my love of horses has been drawn across my life. After years of making my images more and more realistic - it can be hard to let go.

I want to capture the essence of the horse and our feelings as they thunder by. Like a cave painter with a blackened stick, hands red with clay - fashioning an image to be viewed with awe in the flickering firelight - so too do I try to make horses that seem to leap and dance, to run and kick and jump so high they seem to fly.

I recently became fascinated with and inspired by those early cave drawings. I love to wonder what the artist thought as they made them - and the stories that were told about them. Stories and art are inextricably linked for me. I imagine those cave paintings were the launching points that started the stories flowing. Cro-magnon mass media entertainment - "Come children - listen while I tell you of many moons ago, when a magical horse danced through fire and saved the world."

After a decade of making lampwork beads - moving to lampwork sculpture has also been a significant challenge - but liberating too! It's fun to not have to deal with the constraints of wearabilty! In that regard - letting go has been easy!

And now - woefully inadequate compared to the above ... lol!  I'm still working on my bracelet from last week - it's been a busy week though, and all I've managed to get done is cut out the rest of the rings, and punch out the circles. Nothing has been soldered yet - let alone filled with resin.

I did manage to get a bracelet made - but even this isn't quite 'done'. I decided it needed a little more definition, and dipped the whole thing in Liver of Sulphur. I haven't yet had a chance to polish back up the exposed bits.  Excuse the photography as well - I managed to get one lousy shot before the batteries died on the camera. It takes far to long to recharge to wait ... considering it's technically Saturday all ready :-)

Sterling silver, and angelite - All beadfx, but some of the sterling may in fact be 'vintage' beadfx :-)

Til next week!

This week, I have a partial inspiration for you. The project I chose is going to take me more than a week to finish, as I just didn't have the time available to get everything done.

My inspiration was this:

This was a little paint play I did with daughter last weekend. She was painting, so I started painting as well - this was my first time putting a paintbrush to paper since I was a kid ;-) I love the colours though. I haven't yet quite decided whether to shrink down this image, and use cut outs of it - or to just use the colours. We'll see, and hopefully all will be revealed next week.

Here are the components (or one little section of them) the idea is to make an entire bracelet. These will be soldered and linked - then filled with resin.

With luck - I'll have this completed for next friday.

Gail Davis-Bryant sent us this one. Gail recently took a class at the shop on the coiling gizmo - and she's she's been coiling everything in sight since ;-)  Awesome! I have a few more of her pics to post in our gallery which should be up later this weekend. I think I'm now toast for the night :-)

Send us your stuff - We'd love to see what you're working on!

We have two submissions this week - First up the ever talented Nathalie Girard  sent us this:

My inspiration this past week came from a challenge instead of a picture… The challenge is the new RAW2011 (Ring A Week) group on Flickr – it's not too late to join:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/ringaweek/

Each person is making one ring a week for the year, and already the submissions are quite incredible. You can use the materials of your choice, and even the Lark Jewelry Blog has been keeping an eye on the submissions! ( http://www.larkcrafts.com/jewelry-beading/ringing-in-the-new-year/#disqus_thread )

This is my ring for the first week (see attached), made of PMC3, a medieval inspired Knight's Ring which is a part of my Camelot's Trove medieval collection on ArtFire:

http://www.CamelotsTrove.ArtFire.com

For my 2nd ring, I'm working on a slab construction type ring (PMC3), which will go in the kiln today. Wish me luck! :o)

Next up, a little necklace I whipped up. My inspiration this week was quite literally the mess of patinaed little bits scattered over my workbench :-)
I've been playing a bit with the patina's I got from Shannon @ MissFickleMedia

The pendant components were created from copper clay with two different patina applications. The verdigris finish is obvious, but the black one underneath was blue at one point. The spray varnish I used turned the patina quite dark. A hint of blue is noticeable in real life though - slight, but it's there.

Until next week - Happy Creating!

Inspiration Friday - Special Edition

Heh - My special edition really means I have nothing this week for you. :-) I have been busy, and working on gifts - including an all nighter last night to get my kids treasure boxes made.

Unfortunately, no picture as my card reader as gone awol. But basically, I've got a total of 6 stacking paper mache boxes. 3 for each girl.  I downloaded some digital scrapbooking kits, and printed out paper, and other elements which are then modpodged onto the boxes. I'll embellish further with some hot fix swarovski's. I still need to pick up some hotfix stones, and I'll take some pics once they're done.

For those of you who need some play time to make your last minute gifts - Join me on Sunday for the last metal clay playday of the year. You won't be alone! We have 9 people signed up to join us already :-)

Inspiration Friday

Happy Friday everyone!

We're taking a bit of a break from our regular Inspiration Friday posts to show off what we're working on for the holidays. We're all far too busy at this time of year to even think about creating something for no particular reason at all. At least I am...

And I don't want to hear from any of you who got all of their Christmas shopping finished in October - and now enjoying the holiday season sipping wine, or eggnog every night. ;-)

Nathalie sent us in some pieces from her artfire shop that she made up for the holiday season. I especially in love with the little sugar plum beads. The colour and texture is fabulous!

First, my Love Letter PMC3 Charm Pendant on a sterling silver ball chain. This is one of several miniature PMC3 charm pendants I have made for this holiday season. I am a person that likes both ends of the spectrum, either I make big bold jewelry or dainty delicate pieces. This line is delicate and a lot of fun to wear. I think it's a beautiful gift to make to someone you love: http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&op=listing&product_id=2553693

Second, I found some really pretty artisan lampwork beads that reminded me of sugar plums in my stash, so of course, I couldn't pass up the chance of making a pair of Sugar Plums earrings for this holiday season (I have a few more beads, so I can remake this particular design a couple of times). Made of fused Fine Silver and suspended on a pair of my handmade Sterling Silver ear wires:        http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&op=listing&product_id=2445985

I have other similar style earrings, but with slightly different shaped fused Fine Silver hoops and different beads. You get sparkling Fine Silver and happy colourful handmade artisan lampwork beads dangling and adding more movement and color. The perfect earrings for the festivities of this time of year :o)

I've had a chance to work on a few things as well - These are for gifts. Not sure who exactly is getting what yet, but at least I have a few done!

Inspiration Friday - er Saturday

Heh. I've typed that title before :-)

The kids kept me quite busy last night, and I didn't get a chance to get anything photographed. Fortunately, we have some submissions this week!

Carmela G. of Sterling Story on etsy sent us a few things she's been working on for etsy, and Christmas gifts.

Jeannie G has been working on some gorgeous new focal beads - Check them out on etsy, and artfire.

If you would like to participate in our Inspiration Friday posts and get some free publicity...Come on people - free publicity is good!  It really can be anything at all, as long as you were inspired from the post to make something. It should be new.

Once you've got it made, send us a picture and we'll post it here. Submissions should be sent to info@beadfx.com with the subject line "Inspiration Friday"  There is no timeline, so please don't worry about trying to complete it within a week.  If you have a blog, or an etsy (or similar) site - we'll post a link to your site if you wish.

I know that everyone is going to be crazy busy over the next few weeks. Instead of our regular inspiration posts - Why don't you show us some of the projects you're working on to give as gifts? Or part of your holiday line?  Let's see what you've got!

Judy Lovell sent us a fabulous bracelet this week - entitled Dolly. Have a look! Also be sure to check out Judy's blog

I'm still on a bit of a polymer kick. While I had a lot of fun making the steampunk hearts - it's not really my style - I thought I'd play a bit on my own. I was particularly inspired to create some weathered looking pieces. I even found a silicone mold I made a while ago of some coral. These made awesome little 'lichen' inspired stones.

I haven't yet sealed any of these, as I'm not sure yet what to use. Any polymer experts out there? I don't want them to be glossy - and prefer a matte look with these.  On one of the rings, I used Helen Breils texture stamp.  These are so, so much nicer than my first attempts at polymer clay. And then of course I discovered Polymer Clay Daily. Good G*d - there are some insanely talented people out there. If any of you have snobbish attitudes towards polymer clay...You won't for long.  Wow, Wow, and Wow....

I recommend checking out that link when you have time to kill. Seriously, there is so much incredible eye candy....You're about to lose hours!

And so I present you my very humble polymer clay beginnings.

So last week was a complete write off for me, and this week I got a little distracted playing with patina's, making more earrings based on some earrings I made for a previous inspiration Friday, and my labradorite inspiration this week. I just didn't have time to work on anything else. Fortunately, we do have a couple of submissions to show you!

Amelia M made this lovely necklace. You can see more of her work on her etsy site.

And Jeannie sent us some handmade beads:  You can visit her on both etsy and artfire.

And for next week - Lichen!

The last Inspiration pic we posted was this one:
Autumn Leaves

I've had the brilliant red leaves in mind for some time now. Last night, while trying to clean up my desk - I came across a pair of siam Swarovski rivolis. Perfect!

And now for this weeks pic - Go forth and create!
