InspirationFX: Night Before Christmas

Get your creative juices flowing

Night Before Christmas
by: Pam Kearns
This quick bracelet and earring set is so easy to do that you can create them the night before Christmas for a quick gift for someone special, or for just for yourself!

Instructions:
To make Santa Charms: stack from bottom to top a 10mm pearl, a trumpet lily and a 4mm pearl onto a headpin. Finish with a wrapped loop.

Bracelet:
Layout the silver charms (gingerbread man, candy cane, snowman, nutcracker and Christmas Tree) along the length a 6" length of chain. Add a Santa Charm between the silver charms.
Attach each charm to the chain with jumprings.
Attach the lobster clasp to one end of the chain with a jumpring
Attach a jumpring to the other end of the chain as the closure ring.

Note: you can lengthen the bracelet by using more chain and adding more charms.

Earrings:
Evenly divide the remaining chain into 2 pieces
Attach a Santa Charm to one end of each chain with a jumpring
Attach the silver wreath the other end of each chain with a jumpring
Open up the loop of each earwire and attach one of the chains off centre so that the charms hang one lower than the other (see photos)

Close the earwire loops.

InspirationFX: Live Life Large

InspirationFX
Get your creative juices flowing

Live Life Large
by: Pam Kearns
The fashion magazines are full of these larger-than-life sparkle pieces. However, they use resin! If you  want to 'bling' - then use the real stuff! I'm not a wire-worker, but I was able to work the wire through without much difficulty. The 22 gauge wire worked well.

Assembly:

Layout how you would like your shapes to appear (see photos). Do NOT install the stones into the findings yet, but you can sit them on the top for design purposes.

Find the centre of the wire, loop over a pencil, knitting needle, or similar and give a couple of twists so that you have a wire loop.

Next, start adding your findings. Thread one end of wire from the outside of the first finding through the hole at one end, and then to diagonally through the finding and exiting the opposite hole. (Other side, other end.) Repeat with the other end of the wire, criss-crossing the wires in the finding. Work the finding down to the centre of the wire.

Repeat the process with each finding, crossing the wires within the findings. Ensure that the findings' prongs are all pointing upright in the same direction! Keep checking the length and adjusting the spacing as you need. (Bonus design idea - thread beads between the findings for more fabulous-ness!

When the last finding is strung on, work one of the wires back around and through the finding and diagonally out the other side. Finish by wrapping the wire ends around the adjacent wire; trim. Use your pencil or knitting needle to twist a loop at the end which will help tighten up the cuff a little bit more, and provide a loop to attach the clasp.

Attach the toggle and bar to the cuff with the jumprings (one component at each end). If you find the toggle tight to close, add 1 additional jumpring  when attaching the bar.

When you are happy with the fit and all adjustments are done, then you add the Swarovskis to the findings. Lay the crystals in the settings and close the prongs. I used the back of a small spoon to help bend the prongs or you can use a bezel setter. Be careful not to slip and scratch the crystals or the metal!

The Business Chat - Let's go for a drive

Hey, i know what would be fun, let’s go for a drive today!

Ok!

We get in the car, start the engine, put the car in gear and go.... where? ... which direction do we turn from the driveway? How long are we going for? We have half a tank of gas... so.... where do you want to go?

Well we could just aimlessly drive around for a while until we run out of gas. And then we  have a choice of filling up the gas tank and randomly continuing on or stopping.

Hmmm, does this sound like fun?

This is how a lot of people run their “businesses”.

They have an idea that sounds like fun so they hop aboard, buy some supplies, start making product and then.... maybe they sign up for a craft show because they think they should. Or they start an etsy shop and frantically list 20 items and then never add anything new. Or they use up all their initial supplies and keep buying more. Or they run out of supplies and have no money to buy new ones so they stop.

Random is not fun.

Random usually doesn’t lead to anything sustainable.

Random means that you will get somewhere but you have no idea where that place is or if it’s where you want to be.

How about this instead?

Let’s go for a drive. using the side roads we’ll drive to that small town on the lake where there’s a great chocolate shop.

Or, this.

I want my small business to make $5,000 a year profit so that I can pay for a month in Paris next year. I want to make this money selling online because I hate dealing with the general public.

Aha. Can you feel the difference already? You’re heading somewhere you want to be. you’re in charge of your destination.

A small business is a very personal thing, because it is YOUR small business. Your goals will be different from mine and from your colleagues. That’s fine.

So before we get into the car and start driving let’s decide on where we’re going.

Grab your handy notebook. (by the way, this is an excellent excuse to buy a lovely new notebook). start scribbling, pondering, doodling, and deciding.

What do you want your business to be?

As you write this you may notice a little voice in your head saying stuff like “you can’t do that, you don’t know how”. Or you may finish every sentence with a “but” and a reason why you can’t. Do not listen. This is an exercise in possibilities. Your inner critic has no place here.

Try this exercise.

Write a letter to yourself dated December 31, 2014.

What happened with your business this year? Where did you go? Did you learn some new skills? Get your own website? Start an Etsy shop? Do a craft show? How much money did you make? How?

Write your own map, it’s your road trip.

Something Special for the Beaders

s38234 Design Tools - 8 x 11 inches Bead on it Board - Luxury Velvet/Chenille (1)
Something special for the beaders - wait - that's confusing - we're all beaders here. Ok, for the Seedbeaders. Something Special for the Seedbeaders.

If you are shopping for a special seedbeader - and you can count yourself in that too you know - then here is a delicious indulgence. These beading boards are a luxurious fabric-covered, padded board with a soft, stuffed border. They are yummy to look at and delightful to touch.
But what is really special about them is the way the beads behave when you pour them onto the beading surface.

You see - they all fall over on their sides. And when you slide the tip of your needle into the hole and press a little, they jump up the needle.

Don't believe me? S'all right - you should have heard my reaction to this! (It involved ghosts and aliens, I can tell you that much.)

But - you can check out the manufacturer's video,

or ours,

because I had to see it to believe it! Comes in 4 sizes and a choice of decking materials, depending on the type of beads you prefer.

So indulge yourself or your favourite seedbeader!
(no guarantees on delivery for Christmas, sorry.)

Oh, and the big sale may be over, but Czech seedbeads are still on sale, in case, you know - you need some to go with the bead board. ;-)

s22013 Stone Beads - 12 mm Coin - African Turquoise (strand)Also new this week is African Turquoise. While this stone is not a true turquoise, rather, it is a teal-coloured jasper, it is still a striking-looking stone and will work in design projects in much the same way as turquoise. Combine it with chunky silver beads for a Southwest feel, or go retro with ruby or coral colours.

So - as always - you can click on a link or image above, or get started with the new items here. Happy Beading!

InspirationFX: Cafe Turquoise

InspirationFX
Get your creative juices flowing

Cafe Turquoise
by: Pam Kearns
Cafe au Lait with a Dash of Turquoise!

Browns don't usually talk to me but the Matte Outback Wood Jasper stones are exquisite! I teams them up with a couple of styles of glass beads and added some washer spacers for brightness. Needing some colour, I added just a bit of turquoise. While the stringing is a straightforward technique, the variety of shapes, colours and textures give it some pizzazz; great for all and into winter!

Necklace stringing pattern:

  • from the end, use a wire guardian, and secure with a crimp to the clasp, and add a crimp cover
  • 2 x 10 mm jasper, 1 washer, 2 x 10 mm jasper, 1 gold washer, 1 turq rondelle, 1 gold washer, 2 x 10 mm jasper, 1 washer, 1 lentil, 1 washer, 2 x 10 mm jasper, 1 washer, 1 navette
  • Carry on with 1 washer, 2 x 10 mm jasper, 1 washer, 1 lentil, 1 washer, 2 x 10 mm jasper, washer, turq, washer, 3 x 10 mm jasper, washer, turq, washer, 3 x 10 mm jasper, washer, lentil, washer, 2 x jasper, washer, navette. Now you are at the centre, so repeat the pattern in reverse back to the end, crimp, other half of the clasp, etc.
  • Total length with the clasp is about 26.5 inches.
Bracelet stringing pattern:
  • Same idea, clasp, jasper, washer, turquoise, washer, 2 x jasper, washer, lentil, washer, 2 x jasper, washer, turquoise - that is the middle bead, so reverse order to finish.

InspirationFX: Heavy Metal

InspirationFX
Get your creative juices flowing

Heavy Metal
by: Kathryn Gemmell
If you like an urban chic vibe, all dark and serious, maybe a little Gothic, then grab yourself some chain and make a multi-strand bracelet!

This five strand clasp is wide enough to match the chain, but we are using 3 strands of chain, because of the size. The five strand clasp works well however, because you can attach the chain to multiple rings - see photo - using jumprings.

Dress the chain up with "charms" using large metal beads, metal stampings, and Crystal Rivolis in frames.

The occasional jumpring keeps the strands side by side and together for a flatter look.

Go crazy!
