What is a Cubic Zirconia? Many think "simulated diamond" when they think Cubic Zirconia (CZ). CZ's are used as simulated gemstones - and if you Google you'll get a variety of opinions as to how closely they mimic diamonds, largely based on just exactly what the site is trying to sell you - CZ's or diamonds. We think that these are lovely in their own right, much the same way the glass beads are. 
 

CZ is harder than glass, (at about 8.5 on the Mohs scale - nowhere near diamond, but much harder than most natural gems) and we tried the scratch test, and yes, they do scratch glass but are not scratched by it. It is dense - specific gravity between 5.6 - 6.0; refractive index is high at 2.15 - 2.18 (B-G interval) and its luster is subadamantine (Really! I have very little idea what that means - just nod and make knowedgeable noises). It's dispersion is very high at 0.058 - 0.066, exceeding that of diamond (0.044). 

(It's sparklier than diamonds). 

Cubic Zirconia has no cleavage and exhibits a conchoidal fracture (if it chips, you will see semicircular arcs - think of a big chip out of the bottom of one of those old thick-bottomed Coke bottles). It is considered brittle. (Don't smack it on things.)

Under shortwave UV cubic zirconia typically luminesces a yellow, greenish yellow or "beige." Under longwave UV the effect is greatly diminished, with sometimes a whitish glow being seen.

Naturally occurring CZ's are not commercially significant, and are manufactured in a laboratory as a gemstone. Really, really technical information is available here. (If the above wasn't technical enough for ya!)

For a few weeks now - we've been telling you that we need to close next week for inventory. Four days of counting - we're reeeeally looking forward to this. (So remember - next week - we are closed on Thursday the 16th through to, and including Sunday the 19th. The store is closed, the studios are closed, and online orders will not be picked during that time, although you are welcome to place orders. Naturally - it will take us a few days to catch up again on in the following week.)

Grand Re-Opening, and Oh Yeah - a Sale!

GRAND RE-OPENING, and oh, yeah — March Madness.

Our grand re-opening celebration is Saturday! Yes - March 17th - Saint Patrick's Day.
Most of you have heard of St. Patrick, and know that he had something to do with Ireland and snakes and lots of beer gets drunk. The beer is dyed green, and after drinking enough of it, the drinker turns green too.
It turns out - St. Patrick had really bad hand-writing - so when he told his followers to go out and buy beer - what he ACTUALLY wrote was - "go forth and buy beads. From the nice folks at beadFX."

Ok - I'm making that all up - but we are going to celebrate on Saturday - we'll have cookies and cake and demos and you can come down and see the new place (and if you already have, well - come on down anyway.) And we've planned a nice little surprise.

Friends Help You Move

  Real friends help you move bodies. 

Well - we're moving, but we're not asking you to help us move any bodies. Yet.

BUT, we are going to ask you help us move our beads.

Back in the day, when we all still had good knees and strong backs, the standard fee for helping with a move was free pizza and a case of beer.

We thought about asking you to come on down and pick up a box and bring it over to the new location, but ... we thought there might be some technical issues with that. I'll leave it you to figure out what that might be. (Hey, you - put down the Swarovskis and no one gets hurt.)

So, instead we are having a

"We'd Rather Sell It Than Move It" sale!!!!!!

Help us move by buying beads and taking them home, so we don't have to pack them and put them on the truck, take them to the new location, unpack them and hang them on the wall, clean up the packing and recycle the boxes. See how much work you can save us?

Instead of free pizza and beer - we're giving YOU 20% off on almost everything in the store. Not quite the same as pizza and beer - but pretty darn good nevertheless.

Like our March Madness sale - we have a few roolz to make it all go smoothly and to ensure that our staff still has hair left after the sale.
